Urban Legends #1

Urban Legends #1 http://bit.ly/2k8VUXI is a 33-page, full color, horror comic created by Maxim Mel, written by Jojo King with art by Maxim Mel, and colors by Steve Benton. Published by Headshrinker Press

In this, the first issue of Urban Legends, a creepy old guy with long fingernails greets us readers in a smoky bar. He’s telling tales as he welcomes us and offers to relate a little local history in a story he calls Baby in the Oven. This is a tale of one sleepy town where parents enjoy a night out at the peril of their children! You see, someone or something is making the babysitters look bad as one child after another meets a grisly end while mom and dad are on the town! After recounting the ghastly details the storyteller leaves us with a delighted grin on his face as he promises to share more Urban Legends should we dare to return!

First off let me just say that I absolutely dig the idea of using a narrator when it comes to telling stories in comics, and I think it’s an especially powerful device when telling a horror story. With that said, I knew I was in for a treat when I began reading Urban Legends! The storytelling is perfectly paced with the narrator introducing the story, setting the atmosphere, and closing the story. The characters are developed in just enough detail to make them relatable, but not so much that it bogs down the story. That alone, for me, makes this a great comic, but then there’s the art, and the art is fantastic! Each panel and page, to include gutters and margins, are treated with subtle colors and screening to make this comic look like something just pulled from an old ‘70s box of comics. Absolutely brilliant craftsmanship! The character drawings, backgrounds, scenery, action lines, and sound effects are all executed with extreme skill and plenty of attention to detail! All combined Urban Legends #1 is a terrific comic filled with terror!
