The Phantom of the Barrio

The Phantom of the Barrio is a 32-page, full size comic, with color covers and B&W interior. It’s written and illustrated by Jesse Gutierrez and published by Bandido Studios.

The story opens with an unsuspecting couple preparing for a fun night out at a costume ball when suddenly a shadowy figure emerges that dramatically changes those plans. Later we find the title character of the comic at the ball in full phantom costume, and the actress that formerly played the lead in La Mujer Murcielago (The Batwoman) is in attendance in full Batwoman costume! The phantom and the actress’ daughter have a steamy and secretive encounter, but someone is watching!

The pacing of the story sets a strong and adventurous tale in motion with moody and at times spooky art. The variety in character design easily distinguishes each character from the other. The image of The Phantom is really striking, making him a powerful and intimidating figure. The addition of a main female lead dressed as The Batwoman gives the comic an extra verve that I really dig!
