Snake Pit Gets Old
Snake Pit Gets Old is a standard size, 288-page, color cover, B&W interior, diary comic published by Birdcage Bottom Books.
This is the second collection of Ben “Snake Pit” White’s diary comics I’ve reviewed. If you’re not familiar with his Snake Pit comics here’s the scoop: Ben records the events of his day, everyday, in three-panel comic strips. These strips are then collected and published. In the case of Snake Pit Gets Old, the daily strips cover Ben’s life from January 1st, 2010 to December 31st, 2012. That’s a lot of panels!
Over this three-year stretch Ben hangs out with his girlfriend Karen, works, walks his dog, practices and plays with his bands, and gets stoned. He also goes through some very significant life changing events, such as taking his relationship with Karen to a new level, making career moves, and learning to pee sitting down!
As before the layout is kept simple, just three panels per day to sum up everything that’s happened within 24 hours. The artwork is minimal but contains enough detail to clearly explain what’s going on and is very effective for this format. Ben also works in a lot of humor through his drawings and that breaks up the monotony you might otherwise expect, making Snake Pit Gets Old a fun read!
Birdcage Bottom Books shows Snake Pit Gets Old has all sold out, so I’m not sure where you can get a copy but keep checking, maybe they’ll get more in! You can visit Birdcage Bottom Books http://bit.ly/1poS74M!
