Almost Normal News & Reviews No. 1 Vol I

So, I've decided to change things up a bit and rather than post individual reviews, post a collection of reviews, news, and other info that might be of interest. In this first issue you'll find my short, descriptive reviews of a few new publications. You'll also find news and info on other publications from within the world of indie comics, announcements of upcoming events, and current open calls for submissions!

As this thing evolves I'd like to feature news, reviews, and press releases from anyone that would like to contribute. If you have something that falls in the realm of indie entertainment, consider dropping me a line and I'll share your info here! Comics, zines, music, movies, shows, events, or just weird stuff, whatever, just let me know about it!

Okay, now on with the show...

Reject All https://www.fredeggcomics.com/ is a 48-page, digest size, color/black and white, anthology comic with contributions from David Robertson, Clio Ding, DogJohn, Zu Dominiak, Helena Edwardson, Rebecca Horner, Tim Kelly, Marc KZ, Francesca Mancuso, Neil Paterson, Iestyn Pettigrew, Mike Sedakat, Abi Wye, and Cherish York. Before there was Cocaine Bear there was Dundee Bear! An escaped polar bear loose in the streets of Scotland and David Robertson has captured that rampaging bear in the pages of Reject All! Between these covers you, dear reader, will not only behold the drama of Dundee’s polar dilemma, but also be faced with the question “To see or not to see?” And decide what do you do when you don’t see eye-to-eye with the eye doctor?! But wait, that’s not nearly close to being all, oh no, there are plenty of other questions. Where is my mask in this new age of needing a mask handy whenever you enter a public place? What gender should I decide to be? Can you cheat with a sex bot? What fantastic truths did all those shows I couldn’t stay up and watch as a kid hold? And then there’s Star Wars…lots of Star Wars (really David, I think you may have a problem. Beam over to the Enterprise and see if you can have a talk with Counselor Troi). Okay, other space-based Sci-Fi franchises do make an appearance in the pages of Reject All, but there’s clearly some sort of Star Wars fetish going on here. Seriously, if you want variety in your reading, then get Reject All, it’s packed with all sorts of stories and varying art styles that offers something for everybody!

Super Pigs are Invading America!!!

from Popular Mechanics

Highly Intelligent and Possibly Invincible Super Pigs Are Invading America

Story by Tim Newcomb

A special breed of highly intelligent super pigs from Canada have started to travel south into the northern United States. Here's what we know.

The pigs pose a threat to native wildlife and may prove tough to eradicate.
The spread of the pigs has only increased in recent years.

“Wild hogs feed on anything. They gobble up tons and tons of goslings and
ducklings in the spring. They can take down a whitetail deer, even an adult.
Originally, it was like ‘wow, this is something we can hunt.’ But it’s become
clear that they’re threatening our whitetail deer, elk, and especially, waterfowl.
Not to mention the crop damage. The downsides outweigh any benefit wild
hogs may have as a huntable species.”

A hybrid breed of super pigs—a mix of a domestic pig and a wild boar—is running wild in Canada. And now they have their sights set on the United States.

Originally crossbred to help farmed pigs grow larger and tolerate the cold temperatures of Canada, a drop in the market about two decades ago led some farmers to let their hybrid pigs run free. Now they’re running very free, according to Field and Stream. The super pigs are coming south, likely heading to Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Michigan.

The problem? The super pigs are proving hard to eradicate.

“That they can survive in such a cold climate is one of the big surprises of this issue,” Ryan Brook, leader of the University of Saskatchewan’s Canadian Wild Pig Research Project, tells Field and Stream.

The cold-hardiness of the hybrid pigs means they survive well. That means other native species don’t. Brook elaborates:

The super pigs have already traversed across the international border, dipping into at least North Dakota. So, expect an even greater occurrence as the hybrid population only grows. Like on public transit, if you see something, say something. The Squeal on Pigs website makes that even easier.

The super pigs have become adept at fending off recreational hunters, sometimes with entire sounders (the term for a group of pigs, generally led by mature sows) turning nocturnal to avoid the hunting. Other times the sounders will disperse, making them harder to locate, or change their patterns and retreat to forests or wetlands.

The best strategy at reigning in the super pigs has been employing the Judas Pig concept, which straps a GPS collar onto a pig to lead game officials to other pigs. Deception may be our only hope.
