The Dead Ringer
In 15th century England up to 4% of those believed dead and subsequently buried were actually still alive!
To remedy this unfortunate occurrence the dearly departed were buried with a string leading to an above ground bell.
If the interred turned out to still be alive, they could simply pull the string to signal for help…making them a Dead Ringer!
