Geek-Girl: Vol.1: Lightning Strikes!

Geek-Girl: Vol.1: Lightning Strikes!  http://www.geekgirlcomics.com/ is a full color, action filled, hero comic written by Sam Johnson with art by Carlos Granda, colors by NAHP, Chunlin Zhao, and lettering by Paul McLaren, Micah Myers. Published by Markosia Enterprises.

Ruby and her friends are just college kids in Maine living the typical college life. Then, after a drunken bet and a game of strip poker, Ruby finds herself the proud owner of a special pair of eyeglasses. Glasses that can give her super powers! Soon Ruby tries out her newfound abilities but quickly learns she has a lot to learn, and not much time to learn it, as a super villain with lightning power emerges on the scene and starts taking out seasoned heroes!

Sam and crew really put a lot into Geek-Girl that makes this one entertaining comic! Ruby, AKA Geek-Girl, is written as an awkward college student filled with self-doubt and impulse control issues. As she tries to understand her newfound powers she also struggles with her self-image and friends that seem to enjoy antagonizing her. If that weren’t enough, she finds herself as the only super hero left standing to do battle with the super charged bad girl, Lightning Storm!

The writing stays true to the college life and environment where the characters reside, with the dialogue between many of the characters written in an applicable vernacular that sounds like college-age students. The main and supporting characters are gradually introduced and the action is nicely paced so as not to rush the story along. The art is polished and handled with great skill. Page compositions, colors, lettering, and placement of word balloons all come together well to give Geek-Girl: Vol.1: Lightning Strikes a great look!
