Scrimshaw #2

Scrimshaw #2 http://buff.ly/2jQRG50 is a 39-page, full color, action adventure comic from Horde Media. Created and written by Eric Borden, with art and colors by David Mims, and lettering by Spike O’Laochdha. Published by Alterna Comics

The polar ice caps melted and the oceans rose. Nations were swept away in the deluge. World governments were fractured by war. Corporations filled the void. Millions died. Resources dwindled and flight became a thing of the past. Mankind was nearly lost forever. But life was clawed back through science and blood. Follow Hans and the rest of the crew of the Runaway Horse as they make their way in the New Pacific, a world of ruthless business, uneasy truces, and shifting alliances. A world abided by steel, marked by mutation, and at the mercy of the violent sea.

It’s high drama on the high seas as a crew sets sail for forbidden cargo while another strikes a deal with an unsavory fellow to track down the Runaway Horse! Pale tones with faint shadowing brings this comic to life as angular lines define militaristic characters, ships, weapons, and watery outposts! The whole story has a feeling of anticipation and dread threaded through it. The sullen backgrounds and anxious facial expressions feed the tension as each page is turned, more of the story is revealed, and more questions are raised!

The art in this comic really captured my attention! The line thickness doesn’t vary much and therefore doesn’t suggest weight, but the amount of lines and the angles used compensate for that, as well as the shadowing. Figures are crisscrossed with thin, sometimes continuous lines. This style brings a harshness to the characters themselves, making them look like they belong in some gritty, unpleasant setting, and that’s exactly where they are in the story!
